Yutaka Takanashi, Koji Taki, Daido Moriyama, Takuma Nakahira, PROVOKE 3 – Provocative Materials for Thought (プロヴォーク || 思想のための挑発的資料), 1969

Provoke 3 – editions 1969, 2001, 2018 (from left to right)

This is the third volume published by the legendary Japanese Provoke group. It is similar in size to issue two, but came with a fold-out cover, as seen below. Of all the Provoke issues, this is my personal favourite. Thicker than numbers 1 & 2, it was printed entirely on matt paper. This lends a certain Warhol-like feel to the images. Especially to the supermarket photographs of Daido Moriyama. The images occupy the main part of the book, with just a few pages of text at the beginning and the end. This gives adequate space to the images, by Yutaka Takanashi, Koji Taki, Daido Moriyama and Takuma Nakahira. The image section opens with Takanashi (who included some of these images in his renowned 1974 publication TOWARDS THE CITY ). His work is followed by the haunting close-up portraits of Koji Taki. Next comes Daido Moriyama’s supermarket series, which are also partly included in his masterpiece Shashin yo Sayonara – Bye bye Photography published in 1972.  The section ends with Takuma Nakahira’s blurry images, some of which can be found in his book For a Language to Come from 1970.

Photographs by Yutaka Takanashi, Daido Moriyama, Takuma Nakahira and Koji Taki.
