William Klein, TOKYO, 1964 (French edition)

Tokyo, the fourth book in William Klein’s city series, paints pictures with a visual language which we may be familiar with today, but was daring and practically unique at the time. The French edition opens with a half-page preface by Klein himself, followed by nine pages of introduction, dealing with the book’s three chapters: 1 ceremonies, 2 album, 3 ikebana. Klein certainly captures the density of the city. He focuses both on Japanese tradition and the inexorable development of Western cultural influence on the city and its people. Even more so than in his Moscow book the emphasis is on the people (and as usual Klein’s camera is right up close), rather than any known tourist attractions or landmarks. The deep gravure printing by Zokeisha Publications in Tokyo is superb.

The Japanese (kanji) letters TO on the front cover and KYO on the back make a simple, stunning and eye-catching cover design. The French and the Japanese editions were issued without dust jacket, so the kanji design was printed directly on the cover.

USA by Crown publishers, Inc., New York 1964 preface by Maurice Pinguet

William Klein, TOKIO, 1965 (German edition)

German edition published by Nannen-Verlag GmbH. 1965, slipcase back and front

German edition published by Nannen-Verlag GmbH. 1965, dust jacket back and front

The German edition of William Klein’s Tokyo was published by Nannen-Verlag GmbH Hamburg as part of a series by the German newspaper Die Zeit. The series ran to only three publications, distributed in the following order: Bernard Larsson’s Die ganze Stadt Berlin in 1964, William Klein’s Moskau in 1965, followed by Tokio in 1966.
Some copies were sent as Christmas presents to the friends of the newspaper. These copies have an extra page bound inside, with a personal dedication by the publisher and the editor in chief, along with their printed signatures.

My copy of the regular commercial version of Tokio came with the plain slipcase shown below. As there are no stamps or markings it can only be assumed that it is the genuine slipcase.

The plates were printed in Japan in 1964 and 1965. The text pages were printed, and the book was bound, in Germany.

William Klein, TOKYO, (c.1964) (Dummy or sample book?)

Tokyo dummy book (presumably for or by Crown publishers c.1964), cover back and front

This dummy or sample book was presumably produced by or for Crown publishers. No publisher its stated, but it is identical in design and construction to the companion Moscow book in my collection, which clearly has ‘Crown’ on the spine. All text pages are blank. In fact, all printed sheets which would have contained writing are simply blank pages. This obviously includes sheets which in the final book also contained images, so in some cases pictures are entirely missing or only half a double-page is shown. The typeface used on the cover and spine varies from the final published version.

It was produced without dust jacket, so the kanji design was printed directly on the cover.
