Volker Corell, SAN QUENTIN, 1983
San Quentin – Menschen in Amerika’s berühmtesten Zuchthaus is German-born photographer Volker Corell’s second book, the follow-up to his 1982 publication Good bye America. It was printed by Eichborn Verlag, in the same style. The design and layout of this soft cover book clearly reflect the style and attitude of the time. Corell was allowed inside America’s legendary San Quentin prison, to document daily life under extreme conditions. Today such a project would probably be impossible. Violence, power and death are constantly present. German journalist Claus Preute’s short, often pithy, texts accompany the photographs, along with quotes from the prisoners themselves. Corell’s great black and white images are so compelling, that one has the feeling of looking straight into purgatory. A parallel world unknown to most. A very intense photobook.German-born photographer Volker Corell has resided in Los Angeles since 1978.
