Takuma Nakahira, Daido Moriyama, Koji Taki, Yutaka Takanashi, PROVOKE 2 – Provocative Materials for Thought (プロヴォーク || 思想のための挑発的資料), 1969

Provoke 2 – editions 1969, 2001, 2018 (from left to right)

This is the second volume published by the legendary Japanese Provoke group and the first to include Daido Moriyama. It is larger in format to the premiere issue, and came with the yellow belly-band (obi) shown above. The theme of this issue is Eros, as advertised on the obi.

The text section opens with a poem by William Blake:

Abstinence sows sand all over
The ruddy limbs & flaming hair
But Desire Gratified
Plants fruits of life & beauty there.

The photographs are printed on coated paper, with a slightly blueish-grey matt paper used for the text pages. The blurry photographs of Takuma Nakahira open the image section of this rather slim volume. Some of these photographs are also included in his book For a Language to Come published the following year. Daido Moriyama’s erotic series comes next, followed by the lighter images of Koji Taki, which in turn lead to the photographs of Yutaka Takanashi (best known for his conceptional book TOWARDS THE CITY (TOSHI HE), published in 1974). The moods range once again from a ‘classical’ style of photography to the more voracious and vociferous attitude of this young generation.

Photographs by Yutaka Takanashi, Daido Moriyama, Takuma Nakahira and Koji Taki.
