Madonna SEX was probably the most talked-about photobook in 1992. I can still remember the media buzz quite vividly. Madonna teamed up with one of the world’s most successful fashion photographers Steven Meisel to produce a series of photo essays each with a different sexual theme. Madonna was at the peak of her popularity at this time. A number of friends and celebrities joined the photo sessions. Isabella Rossellini, Udo Kier, Vanilla Ice (her then boyfriend), Big Daddy Kane, Naomi Campbell, and male model and artist Tony Ward amongst others. (I remember Tony Ward telling me that on the way to the shoot, he and a friend decided spontaneously to get their heads shaved – this was in no way planned or wished by Meisel or Madonna, but is typical of Tony who, however unpredictable, always proves that he can look fantastic under any circumstances).

The art director was Fabien Baron, who also filmed during the photo sessions. Madonna Sex was published in October 1992 and quickly became a classic and collectible book of nudes. Although the book was a vast commercial success it received mixed criticism.

The spiral-bound book with aluminum cover is housed in a sealed Mylar envelope. To view the book it is necessary to cut it out, thereby damaging both the envelope and the monetary value of the book. This was an extremely clever marketing trick, which forced many fans and book collectors alike to buy two copies. In addition to the book, the envelope also contained a one-track CD, itself housed in a (resealable) Mylar envelope. The Japanese edition came in an illustrated cardboard box.

The various photo sessions are divided into themes and accompanied by fragments of Madonna’s song texts. The full page images and comic-like collages are printed on matt paper.
