Scharf und unscharf eingestellt – Amerikanische Fotografen von heute (In and out of focus – American photographers of today), [1950]

Cover image by Andreas Feininger – New York 42nd Street taken from Weehawken (1942)

This little gem is a thin, small-format, spiral-bound exhibition catalogue showing the work of nine contemporary American photographers. Basically it is a selection of works previously shown in the exhibition In and Out of Focus: A Survey of Today’s Photography held at the Museum of Modern Art, New York from 6th April to 11th July 1948. The exhibition was curated by Edward Steichen.

Full-page photographs by Andreas Feininger, Aaron Siskind, Harry Callahan, Irving Penn, Eugene Smith, Wright Morris, Lisette Model, Homer Page and Todd Webb. The photographs are printed full-bleed on coated paper, and a thinner, colored, uncoated paper is used for the text pages. The front and back cover photograph is Andreas Feininger’s iconic view of New York’s 42nd Street taken from Weehawken (1942).

No specific publication date is mentioned, though, as Steichen’s text is dated 1950, a publication date of 1950-51 can be presumed.

Taken from the exhibition catalogue preface: “This exhibition was curated by the Museum of Modern Art, New York and gives an overview of the works of the most important contemporary photographers in the United States. This exhibition was brought to Germany through the initiative of the Fine Arts Section, Information Centers Branch, HICOG, Frankfurt.”
