Mark Peterson, Political Theatre, 2016
This is one of my personal highlights from the 2016 Paris Photo. Mark Peterson photographed presidential candidates in America for two years. His camera is close up on the pulse of political rallies and official candidate appearances. Peterson is able to distill and reveal the true character of his subjects with his camera. A disturbing and entertaining essay in black and white. Beautifully produced, exactly as one would expect from Steidl publishers.
The book contains several quotes and tweets by past presidents and candidates, including Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan, Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Marshall McLuhan. Especially poignant is one of the opening quotes:
“Journalism is printing what someone else does not want printed: everything else is public relations.” ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE ORWELL.
