Mark Cohen’s book Dark knees was published as catalogue for his exhibition at LE BAL in Paris 2013 and the Fotomuseum Rotterdam 2014. It reveals fragments of life taken in Wilkens-Barre and around Pennsylvania from 1969 right up to 2012. Dark knees is both a packed and compact book. The unassuming exterior hides the fact that it is practically bursting with images at both ends. Images which are themselves barely contained within the boundaries of the frame. This is Cohen’s trademark style of taking pictures. His wonderfully direct approach gives the viewer a sense being themself a witness to these moments and events, a sensation improved upon when viewing these images in the gallery environment. 18 colour photographs are included, but for me this a black and white book. It almost seems as if the colour photographs are light refreshment before continuing this energetic trip.
