Josef Sudek had his right hand amputated as a result of wounds received during the First World War. This disability did not prevent him however from becoming one of the most famous and active Czech photographers. When Josef Sudek died in 1976 he left behind an impressive archive containing over 20.000 negatives and 40.000 prints. This leaves us in no doubt as to his driving passion in life. Broadly speaking, his style developed over the years from pictorialism to the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity). His range as photographer spans from poetic street views to nudes, portraits, romantic landscapes and still life. He was constantly searching, experimenting, discovering the new, and collecting, always collecting images. Maybe it is exactly this sense of obsession in his work, which speaks to me so vividly. Sudek was like a living camera, who breathed light.

Josef Sudek Fotografie, a small-format book with wonderfully-printed gravure plates, is the perfect testimony to this life obsessed. Packed with a wide range of images from Sudek’s oeuvre. Despite the book’s huge print run of 30.000 copies, it is still a challenge nowadays to find a copy with a good, clean dust jacket.

Published by Státní nakladatelství krásné literaturyhudby a umění, Praha in 1956 (when Sudek was 60).
