J. D. Beresford and E. O. Hoppé, Taken from Life, 1922

E. O. (Emil Otto) Hoppé’s photographs bring English writer J. D. (John Davys) Beresford’s seven biographies to life. This is especially fascinating, as portrait studies of this calibre were usually only made of the upper or intellectual classes. E. O. Hoppé found his models on the streets of London and on trips through the English countryside. The collaboration was E. O. Hoppé’s idea, as stated by Beresford in his foreword:
It was he who invented it, accepting me later as a collaborator; although in various cases I have been able to influence his cloice of sitters.”

From the inner gatefold of the dust jacket: “Mr. BERESFORD has collaborated with this famous photographer in presenting seven studies of humanity taken from life. All but one of these are taken from the lower strata of society, although some of them have achieved a relative success in their own world. The effect of this method of collaboration is one of almost startling actuality. The seven characters so admirably described and photographed can never be forgotten by the reader. The seven studies are: a Tramp; a Cabman; a Drug-friend; a Pedlar; and an old Countrywoman; a Courtesan, and a Charwoman.”

E. O. Hoppé’s portraits are of great quality. They are rather dark, and stiff, vaguely mysterious. All are studio portraits, with the exception of the seventh, and last, that of Mrs. Bennett. Mrs. Bennett seems to enjoy having her picture taken, unlike the others, who all appear slightly apprehensive. Each portrait introduces, and whets the reader’s appetite for, the ensuing biography. Each plate is protected by a sheet of tissue.

The dust jacket is slightly taller than the book itself. This is one reason why dust jackets get torn and damaged over time, making them harder to find, as is certainly the case with this book.
