Hermann Larsen, København ved nat – 48 Fotografier (Copenhagen by night – 48 photographs), 1935

Hermann Larsen’s night photographs of Copenhagen in the 1930s are a rare record of Denmark’s capital pre World War II. The title page, introduction and index are followed by a solid block of Larsen’s images. The book is spiral bound (very tightly) and printed in full bleed in wonderful deep gravure. We are presented with picturesque street views of mainly empty streets, night workers, ball rooms and restaurants. The cover photograph shows the tower of Copenhagen’s city hall. This mid-1930s publication is the Danish answer to Brassaï’s classic Paris de Nuit (Paris by night) published in 1933. København ved nat – 48 Fotografier (Copenhagen by night – 48 photographs) is a classic, though now extremely fragile, photobook treasure.
