Frode & Marcus, BEEKEEPER, 2012

A book is a film is a book. Beekeeper is both a film as book and a book as film. The brightly-coloured world of Norwegian artist Frode Fjerdingstad and Swedish photographer Marcus Palmqvist is deceptive. By opening this book you accept to be taken on this colourful dream, with uncomfortable, almost nightmarish consequences. Frode and Marcus have created a story that leaves room for interpretation, but the faceless beekeeper in his hazmat-suited outfit, certainly throws up obvious questions concerning our relationship, not only to bees, but our environment in general. This is underlined by the sequencing and even the colour of the images, as they change from mono-tinted greens and yellows to polluted blueish greys.

The landscape format book is packed with these beautifully disturbing and emotive images. This book was one of last year’s pleasant surprises.
