This is an early publication of work by German artist Dieter Appelt. The artist mainly utilizes his own body and sculptures of his own construction in his work, which he then records photographically. His body becomes a sculpture. Appelt’s work reflects on life and death, space and time, to dark and cinematic effect. The staged photography of Appelt’s “rituals” were made from 1977 to 1979 and published under the title Erinnerungsspur – Statische Vibration (Memory trace – static vibration) in 1979. There are clear parallels to Wiener Aktionismus and the work of Austrian artists Rudolf Schwarzkogler, Günter Brus or Hermann Nitsch.
