As good as we expect from a book by Magnum photographer Bruce Gilden, and as refreshingly different as we hoped. In 2011 Bruce Gilden was commissioned by the Archive of Modern Conflict to photograph people and places in and around London. Some of these images were published in the Archives of Modern Conflict magazine Amc2 journal issue 1 in December 2011. This book concentrates on Middlesex. Gilden seems to genuinely catch his subjects unaware, as he wanders around the streets. His portraits are as hard-hitting as a punch in the face, and are certainly a punch in our face of our common perspective of beauty. One rarely sees portraits which are so intense, full on and intimate at the same time. For me, this is one of the most powerful photobooks ever made.
