Shot by various photographers, this book is a heart-rending account of the utter devastation caused by the atomic bomb dropped by the USA on Nagasaki on the 9th of August 1945. The full-page photographs with explanatory text bear silent witness to the suffering of innocent human beings. Burned, both in body and soul, they are pictured in deepest gravure. The black printing ink is often like a substitute for the red of blood, while the intensity of black throughout the book, carries with it a sense of mourning. This is not a book to be skimmed through lightly. These touching and graphic black and white images can’t help but evoke a sense of melancholy and contemplation.
