Takehiko Nakafuji’s second book Winterlicht stuns, with its strong black and white images of mostly Eastern European city-scapes. The Japanese photographer travelled through Europe between 1997 and 2001. His journey took him through Berlin, Warsaw, Gudanisk, Prague, Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest to find these almost primitive and apocalyptic scenes. His travels were not without incident, and Takehiko often found himself in dangerous situations, and was once violently mugged and had his camera stolen.
His blurry, under exposed images always retain a sense of clarity. He is also a master of night photography. I’ve met Takehiko Nakafuji several times in Paris and Tokyo, and each time I have to wonder how such a calm, gentle man can take such raw and powerful images.
