La semaine héroïque (The Heroic Week) 19-25 Août (August) 1944

Cover with obi-band back and front

This small, slim volume celebrates the liberation of Paris, and its heroes. It was published less than three months after the end of Nazi occupation in 1944.
Each double page contains a full-bleed black and white photograph on the right and a short explanatory note, with date, on the left. This gives each photograph ample space to breathe. The images are by various photographers including Robert Doisneau. All photographs and texts are in chronological order from the 18th to the 26th of August 1944, during which time the liberation of Paris took place.
The use of thick, uncoated newsprint results in strong yellowing, which only adds to the character of this charming publication. What impresses me most is the fact that even in adversity the French held on to their culture and book publishing. Vive l’art!

31 photographs by MM. Arthaud, Robert Doisneau, Jahan, Jean Roubier, Pierre Roughol, Serge, René Zuber & Mme Suzanne Laroche.
