Guevara Shashinshu || Che (Che Guevara photo collection – ゲバラ写真集 || チェ), 1969
Guevara Shashinshu || Che is an interesting publication in many ways. It was created by the members of the Japanese Provoke group under the pseudonym Buenos no Hi (The light of Buenos). The main contributors were Koji Taki & Takuma Nakahira as they were both able to speak Spanish. Newspaper cut-outs are reassembled and remixed, and graphic design is added as a kind of overlay onto the photographs. Different papers are used throughout. The pages next to the front and end papers are printed on opaque paper while the photographs are printed on a type of newsprint. A solid yellow paper is used for some of the text pages. The raw energy of a young generation celebrating their hero is evident throughout the book. Argentine-born freedom fighter, author and leading revolutionary figure Che Guevara’s (14th June 1928 – 9th October 1967) story is told and illustrated through various newspaper articles. The reproductions are gritty and rough. The paper has yellowed since its publication over 46 years ago, which even adds to the roughness and energy of this, largely unknown, late 1960’s Japanese book publication. Published just 10 days after Provoke 3.
