Felix Salten & Dr. Emil Mayer, WURSTELPRATER, 1911

Felix Salten (text), Dr. Emil Mayer (photography), Wurstelprater, Brüder Rosenbaum Wien Leipzig, 1911

This is a very fragile little book published by BrüderRosenbaum, Wien Leipzig in 1911 and has been republished in various forms many times since. Most original copies nowadays have been rebound or, if you are lucky, have the spine simply missing.

Felix Salten became well known for his book Babi. Eine Lebensgeschichte aus dem Walde published in 1923.
Dr. Emil Mayer was a Vienna-based lawyer and amateur photographer.

Wurstelprater is an amusement park located in Vienna’s Prater, a large public park.
Note how the people are photographed from the side, or have their backs turned to Mayer’s camera.
Mayer’s pictures are a great example of early documentary photography, and a fascinating, magical record of the Prater universe.
